Walnut welcome Megan to take charge of #socialmedia

Social media is highly important for businesses today and plays a huge part in developing and growing communication amongst followers, which is why we decided to take on a new Social Media Co-Ordinator!

Meet Megan Gilroy! 

Megan is a recent uni graduate, having completed her degree earlier this summer and has a keen interest in all things social media related.

In her role, Megan will be responsible for creating and scheduling social media content for our clients across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Newbie Ruby! Welcome to the Walnut family…

At Walnut, we believe it’s important to give young people the opportunity to develop and grow, which is why we have taken on our new Digital Marketing Apprentice, Ruby Highfield!

Ruby, who is from the local area, completed her GCSEs earlier this summer and initially took on work experience after expressing an interest in design and marketing here at Walnut.

She has quickly settled into the office and has impressed us with her positive work ethic, confidence and willingness to learn, and is now Walnut’s first apprentice!

As part of her apprenticeship, Ruby has been working closely alongside our design team, learning more about the industry and completing design work for clients.

She will also spend one day a month out of the office, where she will attend a study day completing coursework.

Glen Crossland, Director at Walnut, said: “Ruby has produced some fantastic work since joining us, and has also assisted the team with ongoing projects.

“We all know how hard it can be sometimes for young people to get their foot in the door when it comes to job hunting and work experience, so we were delighted to take Ruby on after she explained she wanted to do some work for us.

“Ruby is enjoying working for Walnut, and we are looking forward to seeing her progress moving forward and gaining her apprenticeship qualification.”

Walnut featured in unLTD magazine…

Putting the team firmly on the map this month, Walnut have been featured in the July/August issue of Sheffield business magazine, unLTD!

The feature, entitled ‘Fast Track To Success’, includes a full page interview with our Managing Director, Glen, where he tells the story of how Walnut first started out in the business.

Glen also talks about how Walnut received the help from the Sheffield City Region programme, Launchpad, and how this helped him in making the business become a reality.

Although being founded in Sheffield, Launchpad are also based within Barnsley, and the team here provided Glen with a huge amount of help when starting up Walnut.

Launchpad provides support and guidance for anyone in Barnsley who is looking to start their own business, no matter what their idea is or what stage their business is at.

Offering a series of workshops and networking events, Launchpad also arrange for regular meetings with a fully trained Business Advisor, who can assess your needs and develop a plan of action.

This is something which Glen took part in three years ago, when Walnut was just a little twinkle in his eye.

In the feature, Glen comments: “What Launchpad have done is help massively in everything other than marketing. In terms of employing people, apprenticeships, hiring and staff appraisals, that was something we had no knowledge of.

“After moving into the Digital Media Centre (DMC) I had a big ambition to grow. Since then we’ve been going at 100 miles an hour and I don’t think we could have done that without Launchpad and the DMC’s support.”

Walnut would like to personally thank Launchpad for all of their support in helping to establish our business, and allowing us the opportunity as a Barnsley-based business to grow and develop into a successful, full service marketing agency.

Walnut visit China as part of the EU digital delegation…

So far this year, Walnut have embarked on a number of business trips outside of the UK, and our most recent venture was our furthest yet - a visit to China!

Yep that’s right, our very own Managing Director, Glen, was lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to visit China and represent Barnsley Council, to show our friends across the pond the advancement in digital technology and business growth here in the UK.

The aim of the visit was to compare the regional and urban development between the UK and China, and to establish relationships in multiple cities to seek business and development opportunities for British based businesses.

With this being Glen’s first ever visit to China, he found it exceptionally educating from a business perspective.

Glen said: “I was delighted to attend and support the council in representing and supporting our region on a global platform. It was an amazing experience to get to meet and network with so many interesting and inspirational people.”

“Without the support of our local council, we wouldn’t be where we are today and being close to our council is important as we continue to grow and develop as a region. We really hope that this EU/China commission throws up further opportunities for Walnut as a business to grow and give back to our local council, and will most certainly put Barnsley on the map.”

There is a huge commitment in being able to connect the EU with partner countries and cities across the world, and at the moment, Barnsley is investing heavily in development to push the region forward, and allow for more business opportunities to be created.

Paul Clifford, from Barnsley Council, said: “The entire commission and programme shows so many common interests with our business and morals.”

“It is vitally important that local businesses in Barnsley look to develop and give opportunities to local people. The talent pool of personnel is as good as anywhere I’ve ever witnessed, and the programmes and commissions ensure we have the best possible chance of local growth as a town and as a region.”

Jordan and Liam promoted to Directors at Walnut

We’re like a little family here at Walnut, as our business grows, we all grow together and we love to see our team develop and expand their roles.

All of our team do such an amazing job, and are all specialists in their roles, but right now we’d like to pay particular attention to our very own double act, the Gilroy brothers.

Liam, who was previously our Marketing Manager has now taken on the role of Marketing Director, and Jordan, our Graphic Designer, will now be utilising his creative flair as Creative Director.

Walnut has come such a long way since the pair joined the team, and in a short space of time they have both been able to transform the way our agency operates, really taking it to the next step in terms of marketing and design direction. 

Since starting out just under three-years-ago, Walnut now has a full office of professionals across a range of departments including design, PR, photography, videography and web development. 

Whilst overseeing our wide range of fully comprehensive marketing services, Liam and Jordan will be assisting our Managing Director, Glen, with our business development and take special care of our growing client list. 

Glen said: “In the past two years Walnut has gone from strength to strength, and since joining our team, both Liam and Jordan have had an immense effect on the way we work and the quality of work we are producing for clients.

“I am thrilled that they have now settled into their roles as directors and I am 100% certain that they can help myself and the team to take our output to the next level. I am very excited to see what the future holds for us!”

LimbBo Foundation, our chosen charity…

Walnut Creative are pleased to share with you all that we are currently working with a very special group of people.

We have been working very closely with the LimbBo Foundation for the past few months, a charity which supports children with limb differences and their families.

Since working with LimbBo, our team have already designed up new information flyers for the charity, and we are currently working on new marketing materials to help the LimbBo Foundation achieve their goals of reaching out to limb different children.

The LimbBo Foundation was set up by Adam Dengel, who discovered after a visit to the hospital during his wife’s pregnancy that his son would be born with a missing limb.

Leaving the hospital with a basic pamphlet of generic limb difference which left them feeling fazed and confused, Adam and his wife felt determined to help other parents and expecting parents to understand more about limb differences.

From then, the LimbBo Foundation was established, in which Adam created informative and helpful leaflets aimed at parents, and story books to help educate young children on limb differences.

The charity also organises meet ups and activity days so that children can come together to take part in fun activities, and meet other children who are similar to them.

The LimbBo Foundation also carries out research and develops new ideas to help create electronic prosthetics to help children with limb differences carry out tasks that they couldn’t do before.

Adam said: “Being a newly established charity we needed to get our work and ideas out to the general public. Walnut Creative offered to help us, and the team created a brand image and gave us all the necessary tools to be able to reach out to those in need.”

“Their hard work and dedication to this project has already seen numerous children be gifted 3D printed assistive devices, given families of limb different children somewhere to turn to for advice and created a lot of smiles on the faces of those who may have not had the easiest start in life.”

“This wouldn't have been possible without the help of the fantastic team at Walnut. Their work is not only of great professional quality, but done with thought and care. We cannot begin to thank them enough.”

We are absolutely honoured to work with this fantastic charity, and the Walnut team will be continuously supporting the LimbBo Foundation in helping to raise awareness of the charity and supporting the aims of what the charity want to achieve.

Walnut at Commercial Kitchen Show…

June has already been a busy old month for the Walnut team, particularly as we kicked off the first week of the month with the highly awaited Commercial Kitchen Show!

The Commercial Kitchen Show gives manufacturers and distributors within the foodservice sector the opportunity to meet new individuals in the industry, and discover the latest innovations on the market.

The yearly event took place at the NEC Birmingham on 5th and 6th June, with five of our clients exhibiting at the show.

We had been working very closely with our clients for the past few months in preparation for the show, so obviously the Walnut team headed down to the event to get in on the action!

Throughout the course of the two-day show, there were several guest talks and seminars taking place, allowing visitors to find out more about the industry and learn new things related to catering and hospitality.

Our director, Glen, also had a spot in guest hosting a seminar, in which he hosted the ‘Exec Chef’ seminar on Tuesday, speaking about all things foodservice related.

Whilst the show was in full swing, the annual Innovation Challenge took place, in which manufacturers entered their latest products into the competition to be crowned either a Bronze, Silver or Gold title.

Three of our clients were entered into the challenge, with voting taking place on Tuesday before the awards were announced on Wednesday.

We were absolutely delighted that two of our clients managed to bag a Gold Award for their products and one claiming a Bronze Award, so naturally we were all very proud!

The Walnut team had a fantastic time at the Commercial Kitchen Show, and it was good to catch up with clients and meet new people.

We are very happy and honoured to work alongside some amazing businesses, and it was great to see our clients doing so well and showing the rest of the industry what they can do.

Clobber-Calm featured in Grazia Magazine…

Did you know Walnut are now rubbing shoulders with A-list celebrities? Well, almost.

Our Director, Glen, has been featured in the latest issue of Grazia magazine with one of our clients, menswear clothing specialists, Clobber-Calm, and we’re all absolutely stoked! 

The magazine piece was included in a small feature titled ‘Top of the Pods’, in which Grazia review the latest up-and-coming podcasts from across the country.

Based in Kelham Island, Clobber-Calm are an independent clothing business stocking the best denim, vintage and leather wear in the heart of Sheffield City Centre.

Founded by our good friend, Ben Woodhouse, he and our Glen created the ‘ClobberCast’ in which they host a weekly podcast talking all things denim, vintage and leather!

Glen said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that the ClobberCast has been recognised and has been featured in Grazia magazine.”

“Me and Ben have such a laugh doing the podcast, and it’s great to speak to so many amazing people in the clothing industry and find out about their experiences and opinions on all things vintage.”

“This is fantastic for Clobber-Calm, as people from further afield will now know where to go for vintage denim and leather goods specifically for men, which also puts Sheffield and Yorkshire on the map.”

Clobber-Calm specialise solely in menswear and accessories from specialist names in Raw Denim, Workwear, Selvedge and Leather.

Stocking a range of jackets, shirts, jeans and boots from around the globe, Clobber-Calm aims to bring vintage back into the modern world, allowing it to make its mark in menswear fashion.
