Meet our new Designer!

Our design department is growing once again - say hello to our new Graphic Designer, Shauna Luckett.

Joining our team of designers Emily, Ashton, Nathan, and Ruby, Shauna will instantly become an integral part of our creative force, creating a range of design materials for our clients in foodservice, fashion and beyond.

As a Digital Media Production graduate from Sheffield Hallam University, Shauna brings with her a wealth of graphic design skill and is experienced in the production of creative designs for both digital and print.

Before joining our team, Hartlepool-born Shauna worked as an Artworker for an exhibition company where she expanded upon her skills as a Designer and will now continue her passion and creativity within her role at Walnut Creative.

As well as design, Shauna will also exercise her skills as an animator and will support our video team on the creation of eye-catching 2D animations.

Marketing Director, Liam said: “Shauna has been welcomed into the team with much anticipation and has already proven that she will be an essential part of the design team moving forward. Shauna is a positive addition to the company as a whole and will play a vital role in providing a consistent and high quality of work with the rest of the team.”

Walnut welcome Emily and Victoria to our Content Team

Walnut are delighted to reveal that our team has grown once again with two new members of staff joining our expanding PR and Content team.

Walnut are pleased to open our doors to Senior Social Media Executive, Emily Woosey, and Content Marketing Coordinator, Victoria Collins, who have both joined the team with a wealth of experience, skill, and creativity.

Emily is a Sheffield Hallam University PR graduate and an experienced marketing professional with a particular passion for digital and social media marketing. As Senior Social Media Executive, Emily will be working with our Social Media Coordinator, Megan, on social media management and campaign creation.

With experience both in-house and agency-side, Emily also brings expertise in PPC and social media growth and will be working closely on all of our social media accounts to deliver outstanding results.

Victoria is our second content recruit and has joined Walnut to assist Laura and the content team on all things PR, blogging and copywriting. Victoria too is a Sheffield Hallam University graduate in the neighbouring course of Journalism. She has previously worked within in-house marketing teams and is an accomplished content creator.

The next chapter in the Walnut story…

Change is currently on the horizon for Walnut and the team have all been busy bees recently, but we are pleased to finally reveal our new look after rebranding and moving offices!

As you’re all probably aware with the updates we’ve been posting on our blog and on social media, this year has already been an incredible year for Walnut. We’ve had so much new work coming in every day which means that we have had to take on more staff and naturally, we knew that our previous office wouldn’t be big enough for everyone!

So, with a new office and more staff, we realised that we’re all slowly moving onto the next Walnut chapter and thought it would only make sense to switch up our current look. Sticking with our previous Walnut logo, our new theme colours consist of midnight blue and gold, which we all agreed looks perfect together and works really well.

As we have changed our brand look, we have also changed our website to match the new brand colours, with new staff photos and a staff video which you can view on our website that shows more of our new office.

You may have already seen a few sneak peek posts on social media, but we have stuck with a standout wall at the back of the office for a real impact, similar to our last office. Our famous tagline has been splashed all over the back wall and so has the updated Walnut logo, which any visitors will instantly notice as soon as they walk through the door.

Although we’ve not been in our new home for long, our team has quickly settled in and made it their own with a new ‘break-out’ area where we can enjoy lunch or coffee with a client, new photos on the walls which have all been chosen by our team and a new ‘meeting pod’ for both client and team meetings.

This is our fifth office within the DMC which we have been based in for the last three years, and our new office is the largest space in the DMC.

It’s been almost a year since we last rebranded and moved offices, and we felt that in order to keep up our ethos of being a modern, forward-thinking marketing agency, we needed a change that was in the form of a fresh new look and a bigger boat for our ever-growing team.

We love our new look and new office and we can’t wait to see what the rest of 2019 brings for us! Make sure you keep an eye out for more updates coming very soon and more exciting news that we will be sharing with you very shortly…

Exercise Army Sustainer 2019

Being a Barnsley-based marketing agency which has progressed hugely in such a short space of time, Walnut have had the privilege of working with a wide range of clients across many different sectors.

From foodservice to fashion and everything in between, we’ve produced some fantastic work for our clients which has successfully helped them to promote their services and the work they do.

Most recently however, Walnut were thrilled to work with the Army on the Exercise Army Sustainer 2019, the Army’s annual catering competition, which was held on Saturday, May 18th.

The event, which took place at the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks in Grantham, is a multi-discipline culinary skills competition which showcases the talents of Army chefs and invites competitors from around the world to take part.

Encouraging teams and individuals to work together against the clock using limited resources and rations, participants must complete a range of culinary dishes and static display classes which included Junior Chef, Open Skills Chicken Dish, Novelty Cake and more.

The competition also included an Improvised Challenge, where a team of three chefs must demonstrate leadership, teamwork and brilliant culinary skills by cooking up a range of dishes using non-traditional catering equipment and open fire.

As well as this, the event also included a masterclass from double Michelin-starred chef, Sat Bains, who cooked up a selection of delicious dishes from his ten-course taster menu and answered questions from the audience.

To help with promoting the event, the Army required Walnut to produce a range of marketing materials which involved the design, content and photography and videography departments.

From the team, our designer, Emily, created some fantastic booklets and pop-ups for the event, our photographer and videographer, Josh, ran the pre-event photo shoot, our marketing director, Liam, took some brilliant photos and created a video of the event whilst also conducting interviews with staff and competitors, and finally our studio manager and content professional, Laura, wrote up a press release on the event to go out to industry publications.

The staff were delighted with our work and thanked us by sending a very kind and thoughtful letter, which states how much they appreciated how work and how much we helped to raise awareness of the competition, bringing it to a more professional level before, during and also after it took place.

We have been overwhelmed with the wonderful feedback we have received on our work for this event. As the Army supports our country every single day with their commitment and hard work, we are truly honoured to have supported them with providing our services for a competition which fits in so well with what we as an agency are best known for.

A massive well done to the Walnut team, smashing it once again!

Ruby and Craig promoted!

As a young, vibrant marketing agency, we at Walnut believe that as our business grows we all grow together, which is why we’re pleased to announce that we have promoted our Ruby and Craig!

Over the past few months, the Walnut business has gone from strength to strength and we’re still as busy as ever making clients happy and exceeding expectations. Most recently however, both Ruby and Craig have shown progression and development in their roles during this busy period and we thought this deserved recognition.

Ruby, who is our apprentice and previously held the job title as Digital Marketeer, has now been promoted to Junior Designer, after spending the last few months working extremely hard to complete a range of design work for several of our clients.

Since Ruby started her apprenticeship with us a year ago, she has shown commitment to her role and willingness to learn new skills. With the high demand of design work we’ve had coming through recently, Ruby has been able to quickly learn from the rest of the design department and is now a valuable part of the team taking on new tasks and projects every day.

Despite being the youngest member of the Walnut team, Ruby is showing real potential and is continuing to tick off lots of work every day from her ever-growing list whilst smashing her apprenticeship at the same time!

Over in the web department, Craig has used his web knowledge and expertise he has gained over the past 10 years of being self-taught and self-employed to resolve technical issues and provide clients, as well as the rest of the web team, with web support and advice.

Joining us just over four months ago and previously holding the title of Lead Web Developer, Craig has now taken the title of Technical Manager since taking the lead on multiple web projects and being the point of contact for many of our clients with all web issues.

Utilising his skills to ensure that projects are completed to a high standard and within the set deadlines provided, Craig has worked closely with several of our clients over the past few months to provide them with sufficient information and support which has lead to web work flying out of the door!

Glen Crossland, our Director at Walnut, said: “Both Ruby and Craig have shown dedication and motivation in their roles in different ways recently. Ruby has learnt so much in the past 12 months and is continuing to pick up new skills as she develops in her role. Craig on the other hand has been able to use his experience on so many web projects and has been a real support for the rest of the web guys and for our clients and we’re now as busy as ever.

“We’ve really noticed the impact that both Ruby and Craig’s work has had and for all the right reasons, so naturally we thought that promoting them was the next step to take and we all couldn’t be happier for them as they thoroughly deserve it. Well done to both!”

What will you be doing?

  • Developing social media schedules and campaigns for a range of platforms
  • Using content scheduling tools and interacting on accounts
  • Monitoring the success of media coverage and developing press reports

  • Liaising with clients in order to generate relevant and up-to-date content

What are we looking for?

  • Educated to degree level, preferably in PR, Journalism or similar course

  • Experience of creating social media content and handling accounts

Walnut In The Wild at Commercial Kitchen Show

It’s that time of year again! Yes, we’re talking about the Commercial Kitchen Show and Walnut are pleased to once again be visiting this highly anticipated event!

Taking place on Tuesday, June 4th and Wednesday, June 5th at the NEC, Birmingham, the Commercial Kitchen Show welcomes manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and other foodservice and hospitality professionals to meet new people, learn more about the industry and discover the latest innovations on the market.

The show will also be holding interactive seminars where key speakers from the industry including chefs, food magazine editors, directors and other experts will host their own seminars based on a particular subject within the foodservice and hospitality sector.

As well as this, contenders will once again be going head-to-head in the Innovation Challenge, where manufacturers can put forward their latest cutting-edge catering equipment and kitchen technology for visitors to vote for their favourite.

The first round of voting for the Innovation Challenge will start on the Tuesday, the first day of the show, and whoever gets the most votes will get to pitch their product to an audience of visitors on the Wednesday, with the judges then deciding on the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

With over 70 exhibitors at this year’s event, CKS is the ideal platform to inform visitors, as well as other exhibitors, about what your business does and the equipment you have to offer.

Walnut’s clients receive a massive 13 Catering Insight nominations!

It’s that time of the year where every UK catering equipment brand in the industry checks their inbox to see if they have been nominated for a Catering Insight award. 

Well, Walnut and our clients must be doing something right, as our customers are up for 13 nominations at the annual awards ceremony, taking place on Thursday, November 28th, at the Grand Banking Hall, London.

The news follows another record-breaking year of growth for us, as Walnut extend the reach of our marketing projects which help our clients, help their clients.

Glen Crossland, Director at Walnut Creative, said: “We know how hard our clients work to help their customers, so not only is it rewarding for them to be recognised for their hard work, it’s also rewarding for us to see we are helping them get their name out there.

Walnut @ the ceda conference

This week is the annual ceda Conference, one of the leading events within the catering equipment industry, and our Director, Glen, will be attending the two-day event!

The conference, which will be held on Thursday and Friday this week at the stunning Heythrop Park, Oxfordshire, invites distributors, manufacturers and representatives from associations representing some of the major end groups within the foodservice industry.

Starting on the Thursday afternoon, the conference will begin with the ceda Annual General Meeting (AGM) followed by an informal networking dinner in the evening. Friday will then involve a day of interactive seminars hosted by some of the industry’s top speakers and the ceda Gala Awards Dinner taking place in the evening, when the ceda Grand Prix Awards and the ceda Supplier Awards will also take place.

Celebrating the best in the industry, the ceda Grand Prix Awards recognises the most recent outstanding catering projects, as well as suppliers who have delivered excellent service over the past 12 months.

With the ceda Supplier Awards, ceda members vote for the suppliers they believe have delivered an excellent service on the basis of quality of the product, support and service.

Whilst at the conference, Glen will be catching up with some of our clients who will be attending as well as getting stuck in with the networking sessions before putting on his glad rags for the evening events.

ceda is the leading industry body for foodservice businesses, bringing together its members and partners to help them achieve their goals and encourage enterprise and innovation.

Last week at the StrEAT Food Awards…

Last week was the annual B&I Catering StrEAT Food Awards and our very own Laura and Mel headed down to London to represent Walnut at the event!

The B&I StrEAT Food Awards took place last Thursday and invites the UK’s most creative street food chefs, caterers and other foodservice professionals from the workplace and event catering sectors to battle it out for the chance to win £1,000.

Held at the Islington Metal Works, the event involved competitors taking part in a live cook-off during the day with 16 finalists from 16 contract caterers cooking three different dishes in just 55 minutes, with the winners being announced in the evening.

Winning the £1,000 prize was Andrew Taylor who won Street Food Dish of the Year for his Cobra beer-battered chicken chapati and triple-cooked Bombay fries. Picking up the Street Food Chef of the Year award was Dan Kirkpatrick from Angel Hill Food Co after using products provided by the sponsors to create a Vietnamese smoked caramel and soy chicken. As well as this, Tom Frost from Elior won the Best Vegan Street Food Dish for his Quorn avocado scotch egg. 

Judging the awards was consultant, Vic Laws MBE, Steve Scuffell from the Craft Guild of Chefs, BBQ Ben Bartlett and Jeni Edwards from ljEss Consulting, who collectively chose Andrew’s dish as the winner based on its authentic spices, homemade ingredients and local produce.

Sponsors of the event included Major, Love Joes, Electrolux, Quorn, Old El Paso, Farm Frites and many others in which a selection of delicious street food was served such as curry, BBQ jerk chicken, stuffed bao buns, vegan burgers and vegan fish, loaded tortillas and nachos and sweet potato fries.

Providing the drinks was The London Essence Co free bar offering Birra Moretti and Budweiser as well as a range of botanical gin, vodka and rum based cocktails which the girls very much enjoyed, maybe a little too much…

Both Laura and Mel had a great time at the event which also allowed them to catch up with contacts from the industry’s key publications to discuss future opportunities for our clients.

We love attending industry events which allows us to meet new people and enjoy great food and drink - we can’t wait for next year’s awards!
